I pretty much with what Mitch Wagner is recommending for first time bloggers although I'd recommend Blogger first (I don't see his reason for not recommending it as a good one. I rely on the comment registration and CAPTCHA to keep out the riff raff.) with Vox a close second.
And then I recommend Typepad as the one to "graduate" to or to start with if you're really serious about blogging and have a direction and focus for a blog already established. My 3 most important blogs are on Typepad. My fun blogs are on Blogger. And I'm just starting to test out Vox.

It is about dang time I update my blog book blog! I've decided this will be the place where I link to other blogs (including audio and video blogs) that I find fun, fascinating or just plain freaky.
Because the blogosphere is growing at a mind-boggling rate, I find it helpful when other people link to their favorite blogs. I hope the links I make to the blogs I'm coming across each day will save you time an maybe even make your day.
Now everybody, Mashup! Not only is this Web site freaky cool, the video they have defining Mashups is a total crackup. Enjoy!

I was so excited to try out the new Friendster blogs. Being the prolific blogger that I am, I was looking for a new place for another type of blog. And the fact that they are powered by Typepad - all the better.
Unfortunately, they have a feature that automatically emails your Friendster friends each and every time you update your blog.
Such a feature is intrusive, to say the least, and even annoying. And for someone like me - who would like to blog daily - it creates an undue onslaught of emails to people who are most likely not all interested in my daily happenings.
I was told by Friendster support that this feature can NOT be disabled but that I could go into my own preferences and disable the ability to receive these emails from others. That is NOT the point - hello!
There are some people in our Friendster Friends who wouldn't really want to receive these daily messages notifying about MY updates but what if they wanted to receive update messages from others?
I will now have to stop blogging on Friendster because of this after just one post.
My sister blogs on Friendster and sometimes I get 2 emails in a day notifying me she updated. I think this feature should be optional PER POST so we can choose to send the email notification. I love my sister but frankly, I trash the notifications almost every day then visit once or twice a week when I get a chance. I'd hate to shut off my ability to receive notifications, though. I just don't want them for every post sent.
I am getting sucked in to entertainment and gossip blogs that are truly a waste of time but an absolute guilty pleasure. Needless to say, these won't end up in "The Everything Blogging Book" because, well, they are addictive and harmful somehow, I just know it. Don't hate me because I'm weak...
Hungry for more? Check out the links on the left side of this blog. Adding new ones as I find them and can drag myself away from them long enough to update my Typelist.
Here are a few cool blog tools I've come across while researching Chapter 15 of my upcoming book on blogging:
Ping-o-matic - Lets dozens of services know you've updated your site and increases traffic to your blog.
Blogbox - offers a variety of easy-to-add features for your blog.
Blog Tricks - a lot of nifty blog add-ons like a referrer list you can post on your blog.
Blogdex - an MIT project tracking the "diffusion of information through the weblog community."
